John C. from FloridaYour ACES Day I just came across this web site. I love it. Can anyone share what they do with their ACES day. Thanks. MC from MichiganFor John John: A parent in my school is the local aerobics instructor at a health club down the street. She comes in and leads our entire school in an aerobics routine, which includes light stretches, dancing, and various exercises. We put music on over the PA system. The children love this event. Almost 500,000 children from my state participate each year. Lauren C. from SingaporeGreat Event We love ACES day at our school. We are in an American school overseas. We love participating with children from all over the world. Charles C. from DelawarePE Teacher John.....we do a mile walk around our school grounds. Kids have a blast. Will be doing it for the 15th straight year this May 3rd. Len Saunders from New JerseyNEW FORUM Glad this forum is taking off. Please feel free to ask me any questions about ACES here. I will do my best to answer all your concerns and questions. Vanessa from CaliforniaNumber of participants At my school in California, we had over 500 children participate together. The students love this program and think it is a lot of fun. I was curious to know about other people in this forum. How many children did you have join in? Jimmy Danziger from Oregon1000 kids We love this program in Wisconsin. We over 1000 kids partipate in our local schools. Joanna M. from New Jersey284 Children We are a small school in New Jersey. We had 284 children participate last year, and plan on doing again this year on May 3rd. We set up 10 stations around the building...jumping rope, hula hooping, running, etc. The children rotate each station every 5 minutes for their ACES day. Jimbo from IdahoI am a student My gym teacher does this program. We like it a lot! Shari P. from Missouri300 Kids We are a small school in Missouri with 300 children participating. E.S. from New JerseyI am a student I am in first grade and like to exercise. I would like to read your book. Len Saunders from New JerseyForum Update Dear Friends: I am still in the process of updating this forum. While updating today, the last 20 posts were lost. I apologize for that, as I know many of the questions were answered. If you had a question that was deleted, PLEASE post it again. Thank you. Pam from Rhode IslandWhat to do with a lot of kids? Can anyone please tell me how they handle large groups of children participating in ACES? Pete from WisconsinLarge Groups? Pam: We have almost 1000 kids participate in ACES each year. What we do, is divide the school in half. Half the school goes on one part of the field, the rest on the other part of the field. We have the oldest kids in the school lead the exercises for each group. A routine is pre-made to music. It has worked out very well for us. I feel like it is very safe. We go over with the children ahead of time how to stay with their groups. A designated area is created for all classes. They are not allowed to leave that area, so the teachers know where they are at all times. The kids love this program, and ask to do it everyday. Our school has signed up for the ACES club due to the high levels of success! I hope this answered your question. JJ from Pennsylvania 1000 Kids Participating We too have a large amount of children participating. We use ACES day as a way to raise money for the local American Heart Association. All the children must come to school with the pockets full of pennies. When ACES starts, we pump up the music outside, as the children start to walk laps around our jogging area. Throughout the track, we have about 4 large buckets. While the children walk, they can throw pennies at the buckets. We actually raised over 800 dollars. It was a great day. The kids are already asking when ACES is for this year. CR from MaineACES walk JJ.....I love that idea. Franny from South DakotaClass Participation Only I teach at a high school. I have done ACES for 10 years. The only thing is.....when it hits 10am, I only do it with the PE class I have at that time. Is that okay....or does it have to be the whole school? Len Saunders from New JerseyRe: Franny Franny: I am glad you participate in this program. Whether it is one class or 1000 classes, it does not matter. SP from IndiaWe will joen in We will particpate from our contry of India. Len from New JerseyIndia SP.....Welcome from India. PE from New MexicoLove this program We do ACES here in NM. JoJo from CaliforniaCan't wait We can't wait for ACES this year. 1000+ students, staff, parents will join the fun. Sean from New York, USATesting Does state testing interfere with anyone participating in ACES? Lacy from ConnecticutTesting Look through the ACES site. It says "Due to the mass participation of this event, there is plenty of room for flexibility concerning the start time of Project ACES. The majority of schools that participate are able to start their exercises at exactly 10 AM. It is understandable that some schools may not be able to start at 10 AM due to scheduling problems, programs, state testing, or even inclement weather. Rarely, some schools may even have to do Project ACES on a different day. This is not a problem as long as the children understand the concept of the day and feel a connection to the event!" This was on the INFORMATION PAGE link. Sean from New York, USAThanks Lacy..... ooops, did not see that page. Thanks Lacy! Lauren from DEPE I am trying to come up with an activity for ACES Day for my elementary school (they have never done it in the past). U of Delaware is offering $500 if I submit a grant proposal with what I want to do that day. IN the grant I have to explain how the activity would involve parents and the community. I would really like to keep the event as simple as possible and was wondering if I just had all the kids go for a walk at 10:00 and invite parents if that would be a good idea or if it is too boring. Any ideas or suggestions? THanks! Sarah from WisconsinFor Lauren Lauren: I think a walk is a great idea, especially if parents, grandparents, or friends come in to walk with the children. The kids would love that idea! Pete from PA500 grant The $500.00 grant sounds great. What about an local aerobics instructor coming in the lead the kids. Put music on and have a lot of fun. BTW, the walk is a good idea as well. Kerri Manning from CanadaCan't Wait This will be our first year joining this amazing event. We can't wait. We are going to set up a walking track around our school for a 30 minute walk. Mike LeMerise from Utica SchoolsEmploying The Older Children Hello Aces- been doing this from the beginning. The last few years Ive used the sixth graders too help others exercise, they also do all the promotions-posters, handouts, exercise schemes, raining day contingent, all the planning- I elect one class that could use some positive PR. This is there 15 min of Fame. Its keeps them focused for a period when others are not. This kids really love the attention. Thanks Mike LeMerise Beck Centennial Elem. Macomb Twp ,Mi Samantha from California1200 Kids We are so excited for this years event. We are setting up a stage outside, putting up a PA system to play music, and having a large exercise session. We will start off with a warmup, followed by dances, exercises, a walk, then a cool down. We are borrowing this routine from Len Saunders. Thanks Len for the email. Holly Arthur from Watertown, MAACES We are a PK-5 school. We have participated in a whole school walk on ACES day for several years. Staff and students love it. We walk 1 1/2 - 2 mi. with the local police assisting at street crossings. The staff wear the step counters that the students use in class. The kids love to help them. The staff share what they enjoy doing for exercise, fitness and recreation. John from New MexicoThanks Holly Holly, great idea about getting the police involved in ACES. That solves a problem for me. Thanks. Dwayne Liles from Starlight Center Zanesville, OHour activity This will be the fourth year for Project ACES at our school. Our center services students in Early Intervention, Preschool and School Age, most with disablities. The past two years we have met in the gym and followed dance music like Physical Ed or Mr. Al Sings and Moves. The student have all practiced in their individual classes and are very excited to learn that others know the same dances. Danielle from Flagstaff Arizona ACES Day This year for ACES day we'll be leading the entire school in an aerobic routine. We think we will do African Dance. Two of our staff members are fitness instructors. We set up a stage and a microphone and some speakers. We get some really great music and get the kids moving. They love it! The fitness routine is different from anything they've tried before, so they are really excited to participate. We include a nutrition message by having a quick lesson in the classroom on a nutrition topic and relate it to phsyical activity. winnie from pape i have 2 school and i do it at 2 schools. one might not be on the day of aces. last year i had taken teachers pictures and put their head on sports cards and blew the pic up and it was a station and all students moved from one station to the other. each station had an exercise. this year i have teachers pictures on occupations and i am hiding them around the school yard as a scavenger hunt to see if students can find them and do the exericse when they find them. We used all the larger rooms (gym, lunchroom, media center, hallways etc.) One station was a aerobic station, another was calisthenics, one station had a doctor talk about a healthy heart, and a bunch of other stations. It worked very well, as we used the building wisely. I hope that helps. We are going to do this again this year because of the high success rate.
