More Childhood Obesity Facts

Childhood obesity has tripled in the past 30 years. In 1980, the obesity rate of 6-11 year olds was 6.5%, in 2008 had tripled to 19.6%. For toddlers and preschoolers aged 2-5, the obesity levels have risen from 5% to 12.4% in the same amount of time.

If both parents are overweight, a child’s likelihood of being overweight is increased by 60-80%. The chance of an obese child growing into an obese adult is about 70%. Children perceive the number one immediate issue of being overweight is social discrimination, as reported by overweight children. This has the ability to prevent them from exercising with other children, which leads to antisocial and depressive tendencies, as well as lifetime psychological effects.

There are a number of serious health conditions that arise from obesity, especially when a person’s joints and arteries are being challenged at such a young age. Some of the main illnesses that become incredibly more likely to occur due to childhood obesity include heart disease, type 2 diabetes, arthritis, gall bladder disease and asthma.

Captain America - Kevin Foster

1. Your name, title, and age? What do you do (or did you do) for a living?

Kevin Foster, Realistic Dreamer, 52. I turn my Dreams into Reality.

2. Who was the person that inspired you as a child to eat healthy and stay fit? What was their relationship to you?

An accident inspired me to be physically active. As an eight year old child in 1968, I was electrocuted, receiving 65,000 and 30 amps from a live high tension wire. To put that in perspective, it would take half of one amp to kill someone in an electric chair. My parents were told by their doctor that I would never walk or talk properly again; that I’d spend the rest of my life in a wheelchair. Institutionalizing me was suggested, but my mother wouldn’t hear of it, taking me home to care for me (as well as my three other siblings) instead. I spent the next four years trying to free myself from the wheelchair, and even more years to speak properly.

3. What did they do to inspire you?

What inspired me to keep going was film footage of then President Richard Nixon and Chairman Mao Tse-tung walking on the Great Wall of China in January 1972. At that point I was just getting back on a bicycle with training wheels and from there the idea just came… to one day become the first person to ride a bicycle atop the Great Wall from one end to the other. 18 years later in the Summer of 1990, that dream became a reality, earning me the Cyclist of the Year over my friend, 3-time Tour de France champ, Greg LeMond, and changed my life forever.

4. How did their lesson change your life?

Seeing the leaders of two powerful nations come together in peace and friendship inspired me to one day do the same, although with a bicycle.

5. Do you convey their message to kids in your life presently?

What I convey to people of all ages through my motivational talks, is that if you have a dream that you’re passionate about, take the proper steps, and perservere, you WILL turn that dream into reality. I use my own life experiences to convey my message.

6. What would be your main message to children today to lead healthy lifestyles?

Be Active. Connect with Nature. Dream…

Our guests include doctors, soccer stars, Super Bowl champions, entrepreneurs, celebrities, and just regular people looking to share their story. I hope you enjoy it!

My name is Don Doward I am a Certified Fitness Trainer, Master Trainer, Executive Chef and I am 57 years old.

2. Who was the person that inspired you as a child to eat healthy and stay fit? What was their relationship to you?

That would be Jack Lalanne every morning I would get up to his TV show. He would say ok kids go get Mom out of the kitchen tell her its time to exercise and that’s what I would do.

3. What did they do to inspire you?

Now there are exercise programs on almost every station but he was a pioneer but not only did he teach you some exercises but talked to you in a tone that was engaging and on a level that could be easily understood. You could feel the passion in the way he talked of course I didn’t know why at the time but I could feel that this was a good thing.

4. How did their lesson change your life?

When he was a youngster he was very sickly, when I was 12 years old I had rheumatic fever leaving me in the hospital and with a heart mummer. But I could remembered that he used exercise and good foods to his advantage and I tried to do the same although I didn’t know how to improve at the time I tried to read and learn as much as possible and I am still trying as this field grows at a rapid pace and still there are so many people that just don’t know how to implement all they have heard into a healthy lifestyle.

5. Do you convey their message to kids in your life presently?

I have been working with youth groups on basics of fitness and meal planning, I have started a fitness program at a local fitness center for children between 10 and 14 years old. To teach them some exercises and some easy ways to change the choices they make at home and school. I am currently working on a program to bring this to the local school systems. With 8 grandkids I have a wide range of ages to test my program on.

6. What would be your main message to children today to lead healthy lifestyles?

The main thing that I think that we need to get across to our youth is that you don’t need to give up everything to be healthy but you do need to make some changes. Ou can go out to eat, play on the computer but be sure to have time to exercise and make the smart choices no matter where you go to eat with your friends or family there are always better options This really is a lifestyle and it is for the entire family. Children live what they see at home. The choices we make everyday will decide the quality of our life.

A Note From Dr. Marjorie Freedman

What is the best way to fight childhood obesity? There is NOT one best way—but we do know that meeting people where they are is important, and that faith and community based approaches work.

Please take a moment to look at the video created by Dr. Marjorie Freedman from San Jose State University, that describes how the principals of healthful eating, moving more, and increasing access to healthful foods is making a difference in the lives of children and families in East San Jose. This might be something you can do in your own community. For more information, feel free to contact Dr Freedman at marjorie.freedman@sjsu.edu

Our guests include doctors, soccer stars, Super Bowl champions, entrepreneurs, celebrities, and just regular people looking to share their story. I hope you enjoy it!

1. Your name, title, and age? What do you do (or did you do) for a living?

Rodney Green, Director of Golf Innisbrook Resort and Golf Club, 49 years old.

2. Who was the person that inspired you as a child to eat healthy and stay fit? What was their relationship to you?

My Mom always made sure we ate healthy. Even though as a kid we didn’t always like eating vegetables we didn’t argue with Mom. No one inspired us to stay fit. When I was a kid you came home from school, changed into your play clothes and hit the park. We played until it was time to come in. Who knew it was fitness. We just weren’t trying to be in the house.

3. What did they do to inspire you?

My inspiration was not to get punished because that surely meant you’d have to stay in the house. With all your friends outside playing, you’d be on your best behavior not to mess that up. Now that’s inspiration!!

4. How did their lesson change your life?

At the time I didn’t realize that fitness was a lifestyle. I’m very fortunate to have been involved in athletics my whole life. Now being and staying in shape is easy because I’ve always done it.

5. Do you convey their message to kids in your life presently?

Always. I stress to them the importance of eating healthy and staying fit. In this video game era kids can easily get caught up and not get enough exercise or eat right.

6. What would be your main message to children today to lead healthy lifestyles?

Get outside and participate in outdoor activities. Play on a little league team. It doesn’t matter what sport, just get involved.

Suzanne Strudwick, LPGA Tour Professional

1. Your name, title, and age? What do you do (or did you do) for a living?

Suzanne Strudwick, LPGA Tour Professional, Co-Owner Junior Golf AcademyONE, Director of Junior Instruction at Fairways & Greens GC (Knoxville, Tenn.). I played tournament golf on the Ladies European Tour 1983-1995 and the LPGA Tour 1993-2006; I was 1993 LPGA Tour Rookie of the Year. Since 2005, I’ve been instructing and coaching in all aspects of golf to all skill levels including junior from age 4 to Tour players.

2. Who was the person that inspired you as a child to eat healthy and stay fit? What was their relationship to you?

My mother has always been very health conscience, she would always put fruit or raw veggies in our lunch box instead of chocolate bars or sweets. We never had sodas at home, always milk, juice or water. Dinner was always home cooked, never fast food or restaurant take-out. She always had a great balance and lots of variety for us to expand our taste buds! When I started playing on the European Tour full time I was able to develop a full world culinary taste because Mum had helped us become adventurous.

3. What did they do to inspire you?

Kept on encouraging to try new foods, tastes and stay adventurous. Not to get in a rut of same old food all the time.

4. How did their lesson change your life?

Playing and traveling all over the world each week, I realized that I was able to handle the changes in food types very easily. Many other players had a really hard time with that and in some cases that would prevent them from playing in certain countries because of the food. They would always seek out the American fast food which I thought was such a shame as I enjoyed trying new and different food from wherever we traveled.

5. Do you convey their message to kids in your life presently?

Yes, very much, especially to my Elite Level students who will be traveling to play golf but also to all my students as well. I always tell them to develop a good healthy variety of food groups now and you will have no problems later; and you will feel better if you are eating better. We have such a great variety now in the USA you can develop this (healthy eating habits) here before it becomes an issue. With the right attention to what we eat and by making better choices, we can take better care of ourselves.

6. What would be your main message to children today to lead healthy lifestyles?

ANSWER HERE: Be adventurous, add variety, try try try new foods, have a balanced diet and no fast food! I’m also a big fan of living an active lifestyle so combining a good diet with regular activity is a great combination.
