What Causes Childhood Obesity? – Part 26

As many of my regular viewers to this web blog know, there are many factors contributing to childhood obesity. I post daily here about it, whether news print articles, opinions, feedback, or just personal opinion.

Recently, I wrote an article for Yahoo! (click here) about childhood obesity. I started searching for sources for this article, and received over 100 responses to the question, “What do you think caused the rise in childhood obesity?” Responses came from professional and Olympic athletes, fitness experts, health experts, nutritionist, and parents.

I was unable to use everyone’s feedback, but thought it would be great to post some of their responses on my blog in a new web series, “What Causes Childhood Obesity.” I hope that you enjoy the opinions here from various individuals. Please remember, my including their posts does not necessarily mean I agree or endorse their opinion, rather, a place to share other people’s thoughts.

Keeping Kids Fit

Opinion: Laura Koniver, MD

My name is Laura Koniver, MD and I am a physician. Of course childhood obesity has many different reasons and factors that contribute, but one of the main factors that is extremely overlooked is that children are no longer in direct contact with the earth for any measurable amount of time. Kids are spending all day in school, and even when they are outside getting fresh air or playing sports they have shoes on that have a rubber sole that effectively cuts off contact with the earth. We drive in cars, live in homes, sleep in beds and exist, basically, completely off of the earth.

The earth naturally heals our bodies and soothes our soul… it literally is an anti-inflammatory and anti-stress platform that naturally grounds and supports our entire body. Contact with the earth sends negatively charged electrons throughout our entire body which neutralizes inflammation and free radical damage to our organs and tissues, and reduces stress and tension in our entire body.

Because we live so far removed from the earth now, our bodies are full of inflammation and stress. Even when our children are outside getting fresh air, rarely are they spending long quantities of time actually touching the earth. They are driven to school in a car or a bus, walk with shoes on into the school and spend all day indoors, play sports or walk outside with thick rubber soles on their feet, and spend all night indoors and off of the earth. As a result, children’s bodies are under more stress and receiving more oxidative damage without the anti-inflammatory benefits of the earth to reduce this burden. We may feel that our body is off but not really realize what we are missing when we miss this contact with the earth. As a result, children (as well as adults) feel a yearning to ground their body to the earth but we don’t recognize it as such. What we wind up doing is eating in an attempt to ground our body. *Eating is a way of making our body feel more centered and secure and grounded… when we eat we feel that we are nourishing our body and centering our energy lower into our body to satisfy this natural instinct to connect with the earth.

If kids spent time each day in direct contact with the earth, the urge to feed the body and ground through food would go away. As little as ten minutes of contact with the earth each day would do wonders to sooth their body and make children feel more grounded. Ten simple minutes of going barefoot… or just sitting on a blanket on the ground, or laying up looking at the stars at night, or clouds during the day, a picnic at lunchtime, any direct contact with the earth… would feel more satisfying, reduce stress levels and inflammation levels in the body, and satisfy us on a much deeper level then food ever could.

Touching the earth is the ultimate craving that food does not fulfill. It is that craving that we are trying to satisfy but instead of connecting with the earth we misinterpret it and we reach for food. Childhood obesity would be greatly reduced if children were encouraged to get dirty instead of stay clean… if they were allowed the time and space to walk barefoot in the school yard… if they understood that the craving they have to get centered and get grounded could be fulfilled with the simple touch of the earth.

Role Model

Dr. Marlene Caroselli

As part of my new web series, The Role Model In You, here is my most recent interview. The Role Model In You series discusses how individuals were influenced as a child to lead a healthy lifestyle. It covers who influenced these individuals, the changes they made in their life to be healthy, and the message they would like to convey to the youth of today. Our guests include doctors, soccer stars, Super Bowl champions, NBA players, Olympic gold medalist, entrepreneurs, celebrities, and just regular people looking to share their story. I hope you enjoy it!

1. Your name, title, and age? What do you do (or did you do) for a living?

Dr. Marlene Caroselli, age 68, retired corporate trainer/author

2. Who was the person that inspired you as a child to eat healthy and stay fit? What was their relationship to you?

My father was a walker–probably because, as an assembly-line worker with two other jobs (part-time), he could afford neither the time nor money for gym memberships.

3. What did they do to inspire you?

He inspired me to enjoy the benefits of being outdoors and observing nature, while simultaneously, doing something good for my health.

4. How did their lesson change your life?

To this day, I exercise at least 30 minutes a day.

5. Do you convey their message to kids in your life presently?

Alas, I have no kids in my life.

6. What would be your main message to children today to lead healthy lifestyles?

Think of what you most enjoy doing. Now imagine that your health is so bad you could not do that thing. To prolong the enjoyment you now have, continue to “get physical,” eat right, and enjoy the world around you.

7. Do you have a web site you would like to promote….web address only?

My USA Today Article

As some of you know, I like to do some writing on the side. I was very excited today when I saw one of my published articles in USA Today. I will try to post a link to it later on. The article was about adequate sleep for kids, and I offered 5 reasons why it is important for young children to get a good nights rest. Thank you to USA Today for believing in me, and for my friend Danny Rotundo for taking the image for the piece.

Keeping Kids Fit

Opinion: Warren Martin

Childhood obesity is on the rise because of more than one issue.

To start every time this topic is brought up for discussion the talk is so one dimensional. Just as it is with the subject of adult obesity. For example the sugar debate! Fixing a complex situation takes understanding all components.

List of some main reasons:

1) The mis-education about the foundation (law of thermodynamics) of what really causes fat loss (energy deficit) and fat gain (energy surplus). It becomes a waste of time when misconceptions lead the train of thought in trying to fix an issue of reality.

2) The misconceptions on what is thought to be right is so ingrained into mainstream society that now these thoughts and methods are being taught to our youth and in essence is becoming part of tradition.

3) Parents are more concerned with their kids being HAPPY instead of teaching boundaries, control, and healthy habits. *This is what makes them HAPPY down the road because they don’t get weight related diseases or picked on for being overweight.

4) Society and Technology!! Schools decreasing activities, kid can’t go outside as much, videos games, etc, etc, etc! Well these are actual things that could contribute but don’t act like there are not options to counter act this. How bout boys and girl club, Sports, Wii fit, biking with your kid, telling your kid that he or she can’t eat that huge candy bar, and the list goes on.

In conclusion to solve this epidemic we mist teach the right education and limit money or rating driven info, parents and adults get responsible, and quit blaming entities that really would never fix the problem alone. COMMONSENSE!

Moderation And Supervision

Taking A Bite Out Of Obesity

I stopped into a Dunkin Donuts today for a cup a hot tea with honey. My throat was sore, and I thought this would help ease the discomfort.

When I walked in, I saw a couple of families at table, with a box of munchins on the table and soft drinks. The mothers were at one end, and the kids at the other. My line was long, so now I become an observer.

The moms were sipping away at their coffee, while the kids were doing their thing at their end. The children were between 3-7 years old. They were just popping away those munchins over and over, inhaling more than I ever could. One kids even had a bag of chips he kept reaching at from his mothers bag. All the kids had some sugary soft drink.

As my line slowly moved up, I got closer to their table. Another child was dipping their candy into some sugary juice, then sucking on the candy. One of the older children was opening a sugar packet, then swallowing some of its contents. Meanwhile, the moms were oblivious to all this.

Now, this is just my observation, and not my opinion…..but it goes back to two things that may help children eat more nutritiously – - Moderation and Supervision.

I always start to wonder when a bad habit will start for a child, and what a defining moment could be? Is it possible that this trip to Dunkin Donuts will define a child’s health habit for their life? Probably not! But, I would guess, if it happened over and over again, it could be the start of this ‘defining moment.’

Finally, got my tea, paid and headed out. As I was walking out, I overheard one of the smaller kids say to the mom, “I belly hurts.”

Well, again, just an observation to start my day. Hope everyone is enjoying their summer.

Keeping Kids Fit

Opinion: Gerald R. Campbell, Ph.D.

One thing that I believe you need to look at carefully, especially when comparing with historical data, is the change in definition of obesity. From decades ago, obesity was determined by standard height-and-weight charts; those charts could be converted to BMI to get a range of values from then. Also, the definition of obesity as defined by BMI has been changed over the past few years.

Childhood Obesity Education

From Saint Louis Today…..

The American Medical Association put its weight Wednesday behind requiring yearly instruction aimed at preventing obesity for public schoolchildren and teens.

The AMA, the nation’s largest physicians group, agreed to support legislation that would require classes in causes, consequences and prevention of obesity for first- through 12th-graders. Doctors will be encouraged to volunteer their time to help with that under the new policy adopted on the final day of the AMA’s annual policymaking meeting.

Another new policy adopted Wednesday says the AMA supports the idea of using revenue from taxes on sugar-sweetened sodas as one way to help pay for obesity-fighting programs. But the group stopped short of fully endorsing such taxes.
