By Michelle Hastie

It’s no secret that those with their ideal body have different thought patterns and beliefs. The question then becomes what the heck are those different thought patterns and beliefs? Being that I lived my life in my ideal body, overweight and then back to my ideal body I am very aware what those differences are. Today we are focusing on the 10 ways to change your thinking around food and exercise. This will allow you to have your ideal body by thinking the same way those who have the results you desire do! Now as you read these you may think to yourself… “Well of course they don’t do the things I do because they aren’t trying to lose weight, they are already slim!” I want you to think about whose habits you are modeling… most of you are modeling dieters. It’s time to listen to the real experts, those who don’t think about their weight ever!

1. The Naturally Slim and Slender Don’t Count Their Calories

Have you ever met someone who stays slim naturally? Not the person who is dieting to stay trim, but that person who you quietly scowl at because they are on their 3rd piece of pizza and you are wondering where the heck they put it? Well that person does not count their calories. Nor do they care. They simply eat until they are full and they trust that their body will give them that cue therefore it’s not their job to determine how much to eat.

2. The Naturally Slim and Slender Refuse to Starve

When you talk to someone who has never struggled with their weight they will tell you they love food, and they especially love to eat it. Duh right?! The only people who are starving themselves are dieters and last time I checked those aren’t the results you desire… so it’s time to stop following their habits!

3. The Naturally Slim and Slender Don’t Understand the Need for “Cheat Days”

Whenever I hear someone say they are having a “cheat day” I cringe a little because it takes me right back to my dieting days. Trust me when I tell you there are no naturally thin people having cheat days. In their mind every day is a cheat day because there are no rules! And when there are no rules, there is no desire to overeat, binge eat or eat the 3 pints of ice cream that you have to get out of the house before the cheat day is over.

4. The Naturally Slim and Slender Emotionally Eat without Weight Gain

Everyone emotionally eats! Why? Because eating is an emotional experience.

Everyone emotionally eats! Why? Because eating is an emotional experience. It can bring up memories from our mothers home cooking, or our first date at that delicious Italian restaurant. The problem starts when you abuse food, which you will not find in the household of someone who is in their ideal body. So to recap… emotional eating… Good… abusing food… Bad.

5. The Naturally Slim and Slender Don’t Believe in Labeling Something as “Eating Bad”

First of all there is no “eating bad” when you aren’t worrying about your pounds. There is simply food that made you feel good and food that made you feel bad. No judgment. No shame. No guilt. Just an understanding that eating that food again definitely has a consequence. You can still eat it; you just have to deal with the consequences.

It has long been known that stress can be a huge distraction for people when they’re trying to accomplish things that need to get done. In fact, stress can get so overwhelming that people either lose their sense of organization or simply forget what the next item on their list is.

According to a study conducted by psychologists from the University of Wisconsin (Madison), stress does in fact do all of that, and more. To understand why, it’s necessary to start with the fact that memory is composed of several components, the two primary elements being the short-term and long-term memory. These different kinds of memories rely on very specific neurons in the brain. When stress is experienced by someone, it disrupts the signals in the prefrontal cortex of their brain, which interferes with their brain’s ability to retain short-term memory.

This interruption often accounts for a stressed person’s difficulty in focusing on the task at hand, or in simply remembering what else should be done next. According to the research results, although interference with the prefrontal cortex will not necessarily affect your memories in general, it will definitely affect your attention span. Because concentration is key to a good memory, having a well-organized prefrontal cortext is an integral component when you’re trying to improve your memory.

Explained psychology professor Craig Berridge, “People without a prefrontal cortex are very distractible. They’re very impulsive. They can be very argumentative.” Distractions are one of the top barriers to memory, and this study affirms what the developers of Ultimate Memory Software have concluded: stress does have a negative effect on memory improvement. Although the eReflect has produced a very reliable program that can help people improve their short-term memories, Ultimate Memory, they believe that no matter how effective their program is, it’s also extremely important for the software’s users to learn how to deal with their own stress, and eliminate it as much as possible from their lives.

Stress is not altogether avoidable, of course, but at the same time this isn’t a problem that is necessarily unsolvable. And it’s important to solve the problem as much as possible. This study confirms that stress can have a devastating affect on a person’s life, not only on their personal affairs, but even in the way their memory functions.

Finding a way to deal with stress, therefore, ought be at the top of everyone’s list. It’s an added benefit that it will provide them with sharper memories in the end as well.

Another healthy tip courtesy of Drs. Mira and Jayson Calton

“Make a Perfect Plate to Oust Osteoporosis! Try having organic Greek yogurt and a few dried prunes for breakfast, Salad with canned salmon and gouda cheese, avocado and sunflower seeds for lunch and Steak with sautéed onions and sweet potato for Dinner,” says, Mira and Jayson Calton, PhD from their latest book, Rich Food, Poor Food: readers get a unique Grocery Purchasing System (GPS) to navigate the grocery store aisles with ease, identifying micronutrient-Rich Foods (those that contain higher amounts of the vitamins, minerals, and essential fatty acids that the body needs to perform all the functions of healthy living.), while avoiding over 150 Poor Food ingredients such as pesticides, carcinogens, hormones, and genetically modified organisms (GMOs).

Here’s why:

Breakfast: Yogurt and Dried Prunes.

Your bones require many micronutrients to stay strong. And you can’t absorb micronutrients without good strong gut bacteria. Start with an organic Greek yogurt and a few dried prunes. The yogurt gives you healthy bacteria to keep your gut ready to absorb vitamins and minerals. Purchase organic to ensure the dairy cows were not treated with rGBH (synthetic hormones). A Florida State University study proved that eating a serving of prunes every day stopped bone loss and increased bone density in post-menopausal women. The high fiber content in these wrinkled wonders also reduced hunger in study participants. Osteoporosis is the pits. To reduce your risk for it, enjoy these pitted delights.

Lunch: Salad with canned salmon and gouda cheese, avocado and sunflower seeds.

Don’t choose a spinach salad. Spinach has too much oxalic acid, which depletes magnesium and calcium. Opt for romaine and load it up with an array of brightly colored vegetables. Then add Gouda cheese to the top. This cheese of Dutch origin is the third-highest source of the elusive vitamin K2. Only natto, a Japanese fermented soybean dish, and goose liver pate surpass it. There are two natural forms of vitamin K—K1, which comes from plants and is essential for blood clotting, and K2, which comes from bacterial/animal sources and may reduce the risk of osteoporosis, arterial calcification, rheumatoid arthritis, and even certain types of cancer. Chop up 3 ounces to be eaten over the day or dice into your salad here.

Add salmon: This fatty fish is a delicious source of vitamin D, which helps the body metabolize and absorb the calcium in food. Vitamin D is converted to its active form in the kidneys, enabling it to help with calcium absorption. Additionally, omega-3 in the salmon also helps absorb and retain calcium. The bones in the canned salmon are nearly impossible to see or taste but they add in a large dose of calcium to your meal.

The sunflower seeds and avocado are loaded with healthy fats, and also vitamin E, which aids in the utilization of that elusive vitamin K.

Dinner: Steak with sautéed onions and sweet potato

Beef: Don’t be cared of earlier reports that protein is bad for your bones. According to a systematic review including 61 studies from the past three decades published in Amer. Journal of Clinical Nutrition indicates that despite common misconceptions protein doesn’t negatively impact bone health. Choose your meat wisely. Purchase grass-fed organic beef for its higher levels of healthy fats like CLA and omega-3, and lower amounts of omega-6 and saturated fat than grain-fed cows.

Onions are loaded with numerous bone-building compounds. First, they contain something called F-L-glutamyl-trans- S-1-propenyl-L-cysteine sulfoxide that may inhibit the activity of cells responsible for breaking down bones. Onions also contain quercetin and kaempferol, two phytochemicals that may increase bone density. These white bone builders also promote bone health because they contain inulin, a plant fiber that has been shown to increase calcium absorption by 33 percent. So serving onions in a cream sauce may be a prescription for an osteoporosis free future. These numerous nutrients may help to explain why the women of Turkey, who have the highest consumption of onions in the world, also have the lowest osteoporosis fracture rate in Europe.

Sweet potato: Sweet potatoes are a fabulous source of potassium, which research suggests may boost bone health. Studies have found that people whose diet contains plenty of potassium have denser bones. They also lose less calcium in their urine.

1. Your name, title, and age? What do you do (or did you do) for a living?

Donna Spangler, Hollywood beauty, fitness and lifestyle expert & author.

2. Who was the person that inspired you as a child to eat healthy and stay fit? What was their relationship to you?

I lived with my grandmother and she always cooked for me and taught me to eat healthy. She had an organic vegetable garden, an avocado
tree and an apple tree. My parents were out of shape and I realized that I wanted to be in better shape and so I followed my grandmother’s guidance on eating
healthy.

3. What did they do to inspire you?

I guess you could say that my grandmother inspired me to eat healthy and she encouraged me to keep fit and in shape. My parents taught
me that I did not want to follow in their footsteps.

4. How did their lesson change your life?

My grandmother lived to be 97 years old which is a really long time especially for her era when people did not live as long. My father smoked
and drank and eats a lot of fatty foods and my mother always over ate and did not exercise. Today, they both have a lot of health issues. Looking at my parents
and grandmother, they all taught me that I wanted to take care of myself and live a healthy lifestyle.

5. Do you convey their message to kids in your life presently?

I always try to encourage my nieces to exercise and eat healthy. I think they look at me as a role model. I am glad that I can give them positive
advice.

6. What would be your main message to children today to lead healthy lifestyles?

I would tell them to not eat sugar and fatty foods. I would tell them to stay away from cigarettes, drugs and alcohol. I would also tell them to
always be positive and to be kind to others in life.

7. Do you have a web site you would like to promote….web address only?

After a recent study, the advantages of using an elliptical machine have been revealed by TopConsumerReviews.com. TopConsumerReviews.com provides independent reviews for thousands of products including elliptical machines in order to help consumers make well informed decisions.

Treadmills, stationary bikes, jogging, walking, exercise videos and many other popular exercise regimens are constantly competing for a share of the billion dollar fitness industry. The options for exercise can be quite overwhelming when we listen to our family, friends and fitness experts give their opinions on what we should and should not do. Choosing the right exercise equipment is a very personal decision and one that needs to include considering current fitness level, time constraints, likes, dislikes, privacy, budget and more. One option many people are turning to today is an elliptical machine.

TopConsumerReviews.com has discovered several advantages that elliptical machines have over other exercise options that can’t be found elsewhere. Elliptical machines provide a high cardiovascular workout that is extremely low impact to the joints and body. Very few exercises and fitness equipment can provide such a low impact workout that helps protect the body today and in the future. Elliptical machines also save time. With arms and legs going at the same time, people find that they are not only improving cardiovascular endurance but are toning and tightening their entire body at the same time.

Another great advantage to elliptical machines are the that they are easy to use. It doesn’t require an ex-athlete to figure out how to work an elliptical machine and use it with confidence. Essentially one steps-up, holds on and lets the machine move the limbs in the right direction. The movement is similar to walking and swinging the arms at the same time – something done every day.

The elliptical machine is an excellent choice for an easy, low-impact, high results workout over many other popular exercise options.

Running from one activity to the next, eats away at not only time, but the overall quality of life for families. Not to mention, those activities often leave mom or dad on the side-lines watching instead of taking advantage of the benefits. Martial arts is a healthy alternative to traditional activities and it is something the entire family can do.

Martial arts education has been around for centuries, but only since the early 70′s did it start to catch on in the United States. Then it was predominately popular amongst the rough and tough adults of the day. Around the mid 80s the kids started to trickle into classes with the explosion of the original Karate Kid. After that it was Ninja Turtles, Power Rangers and numerous others productions attempting to capture the hearts and minds of little ones. Currently, there is a mix-martial arts fad, but there is still an ever growing population of elite schools that receive families. Such high quality martial arts programs provide families with a healthy and safe alternative to the more traditional activities.

For the children, traditional sports and after school activities are more social and less productive in terms of life skills. Combine poorly staffed programs with overcrowded, unmotivated participants and you get a lot of opportunities for unbecoming behaviors.

For the children, traditional sports and after school activities are more social and less productive in terms of life skills. Combine poorly staffed programs with overcrowded, unmotivated participants and you get a lot of opportunities for unbecoming behaviors. I’m all for letting kids be kids, but there seems to be too much free time, not enough structure and little motivation within many programs. Many times with traditional sports politics, cliques and favoritism exist and play a big role in whether or not children get to participate in the activity. Not having the opportunity to participate can greatly affect their feelings of self worth, confidence and self esteem. In the end, sports becomes more of a game about how we can win, instead of providing educational opportunities about life.

For parents themselves, taking part in a martial arts program will allow them to model ideal healthy lifestyle habits as well as, increase their own overall fitness levels, reduce stress and obtain mental clarity. With martial arts, no longer are the parents only allowed to “watch” their children do all the things they use to do, they do it along side them bringing another level of connection, purpose and meaning to each other. In some cases, everyone can participate at the same time, providing a wonderful balance of time, fitness and family.

With the numerous benefits martial arts provides practitioners, for families it brings a whole new meaning to “quality time.”

As Bel Marra Health reports in its article (http://www.belmarrahealth.com/cancer/if-caffeine-can-kill-uscan-it-also-kill-cancer/), cancer is a leading cause of death worldwide, and the World Health Organization records 7.6 million cancer deaths in 2008. Research is continually been conducted to learn more about this deadly disease, and to develop new treatment options for individuals diagnosed with cancer.

Recently, researchers from the University of Alberta were able to use the deadly effects of caffeine on fruit flies, to gain a better understanding of how caffeine can be used towards new cancer therapies for humans.

Cancer is characterized by abnormal cell growth. Normal cells go through a process of growth, division, and eventually, cell death. Cancer occurs when this regular cell pattern breaks down. Cancer cells do not undergo normal cell death; rather, they continue to multiply, creating a rapidly growing mass that starts to interfere with normal body functions. Cancer can affect any area of the body, and there are over 100 different types of cancer. Treatment of cancer varies depending on the type of cancer, the patient’s health status, and other factors. Typical cancer treatment methods include radiation, chemotherapy, surgery, immunotherapy, hormone therapy or gene therapy. The success of cancer treatment also varies from person to person, and early detection is associated with higher survival rates.

There has been a lot of research examining the role of caffeine in cancer prevention over the past few years, that has shown some promising results. Previous research has shown that caffeine interferes with cancer cell processes that involve DNA repair, which can stop it from multiplying. While these findings are informative, the amount of caffeine necessary to achieve these positive results is high enough to be deadly for humans. Thus, researchers strive to use this information in other ways to get closer to the development of a new, practical cancer treatment.

While scientists are now aware that high doses of caffeine can interfere with DNA repair – and hence, multiplication – of cancer cells, they can’t actually use this information to create a realistic treatment for cancer patients quite yet. First, scientists have to pinpoint the exact genes and proteins that are guilty of turning normal cells into cancer cells, and understand how these genes and protein work to cause cell multiplication. Once we understand these processes, then cell sensitivity to caffeine can be used to create successful, targeted therapies for cancer patients.

Researchers Ran Zhuo and Xiao Li decided to use particular fruit flies with a mutant gene (known as the melanoma antigen gene, or MAGE) to get a better understanding of how caffeine operates to kill cells. While the flies flourished on a regular diet, their cells spontaneously destroyed themselves when the flies’ diets were supplemented with caffeine. Additionally, the researchers noted that the mutant fruit flies fed caffeine developed severely disfigured eyes.

Observation of the flies’ physical reactions to caffeine allowed the researchers to identify three genes — SMC5, SMC6, and MAGE – that are responsible for the multi-protein complex that controls DNA repair and cell division.

The findings from this study demonstrate how we’ve been able to use the lethal effects of caffeine to our advantage, using them to come one step closer to the development of successful treatments for cancer patients. Developing new types of treatment that target specific genetic changes can open up a whole new dimension of possible treatment options, that could give millions of people the opportunity to finally live cancer-free.

1. Your message to kids today that you wish you knew back then what you currently know now. Be specific.

I wish I knew more about autoimmune disease. I wish I knew how hard life is with so many of them and that if any of my family had one of the 100+ diseases I was at higher risk of getting one myself. I wish that I knew that if you had one, even a minor one like eczema that this opens the door to some potentially deadly ones and being aware of what goes into my body can be the difference between a healthy productive life or a life with chronic illness and way too much time spent in doctor’s offices or hospitals. I wish I knew that 1 out of 5 Americans (and by association Canadians) are dealing with an autoimmune disease or disorder and out of that 20% of our population 70% are females. I wish I would have known that autoimmune disease is one of the top ten causes of death for female children and women under 65 years old.

2. How did you learn your lesson or what was your lesson? Did you get hurt, did you upset someone, did you get scared?

I learned my lesson the hard way by acquiring one of those diseases. There are about 140 some of which are rare, some are very rare and some are not rare at all like MS, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Lupus, Ciliac, Crohn’s, Type 1 Diabetes, and on and on. I have one of the rarer ones, Wegener’€™s Granulomatosis, but when you look past the part of the human anatomy being affected, it’€™s no different from all the others on the list. All of us have an immune system that has stopped recognizing the difference between self and non self and is attacking its own vessel. My lesson was that there is a gaping hole in the information about this disease group as a whole that can help people make more educated and conscious decisions in their life that could eliminate contact with a possible trigger if you happen to be predisposed. I got motivated. Motivated into action to do everything in my power to change this and unite all of those with autoimmune diseases to stand together and raise that needed awareness that can save lives.

3. What you would have done differently back then if you could turn back time?

Had I known this info before I got sick I would have done greater research into foods that can help prevent and deal with minor inflammatory responses, I would have stayed away from having contact with anything that would increase the normal immune response to higher than normal levels. I would also have gone in the right direction at the onset of symptoms (currently getting diagnosed with an autoimmune disease is a long, difficult process rife with insinuations of hypochondria and melodrama from society and the medical profession – through no fault of their own, it’s a lack of knowledge and education in this field) and possibly could have had the possibility to reverse the process rather than being stuck with a lifelong incurable disease.

4. Do you convey this message to children in your life today?

Yes, I convey this message to my daughter, to my friends, my community and anyone willing to listen. I wish everyone knows now what I wish I knew then. I started Pajama Day to raise awareness and we have now had two with it growing exponentially. We now have interest from large corporate sponsors and I will make sure this piece of info snowballs forward and reaches maximum velocity to a point where we will find the common thread to all these diseases and autoimmune will no longer be a problem.

5. Anything else you`d like to add?

Here’s a page on my blog that will give you a rundown of our last two PJ Day events in Jasper. We managed to get a TV Breakfast Show to come up and shoot their entire 3.5 hour show live from our town where the Second Annual PJ Day was taking place. You will find links to those live shots, as well as photo links and viedos of our evening show.

With spring in the air and bikini weather just around the corner, many people are hitting the gym, starting a workout plan and changing their eating habits with the hopes of losing weight for the summer. For anyone planning to follow a low calorie diet plan in order to lose weight fast, read on to find out two reasons why low calorie diet plans just don’t work!

“I cannot tell you how many people have emailed me saying that they followed certain popular low calorie diet plans for a few weeks only to find out that they haven’t lost much weight,” states Verena Martin, CCHT, SouthPark Hypnosis founder and consulting hypnotist. “Feeling discouraged, they felt that weight loss is impossible and therefore, they quit the diet program altogether!”

According to Martin, the number one reason why low-calorie diet plans don’t work is simple. When people eat low-calorie foods, the body basically remains malnourished, and feels sick and tired at all times. Forget about exercises, the body doesn’t have enough energy to complete even its regular activities. All these things happen because the metabolic rate is low!

To lose weight successfully, Martin suggests keeping these two things in mind:

1. Calories are not the enemy: Calories are not what should avoid; “good calories” are required to supply the body with the necessary nutrition and energy. When the body gets enough food, it will increase its metabolic rate, which will automatically result in weight loss!

The “bad calories” are those found junk foods. So while the body won’t accumulate fat by eating 10 apples per day (even though a single apple contains almost 100 calories), it will surely get fat by eating 10 burgers!

That is the basic difference! Avoid empty calories (that is, junk foods) and embrace negative calorie foods, such as fruits and vegetables. Now negative calorie doesn’t mean that there is no calorie in these foods; it only means that in order to digest themselves, these foods will force the body to burn more calories than what they provide! This results in calorie deficit which will ultimately result in weight loss.

2. Muscle building is a must: It’s a fact, in order to maintain themselves, muscles burn a lot of calories. This in effect means that the more lean muscles a person has, the faster the weight loss. Eating protein-rich foods is a good way of building lean muscles; working out regularly in the gym is another. There is another yet advantage of eating protein-rich foods: the body won’t feel hungry too often; as such, the possibility of overeating is almost non-existent.

“When you eat low-calorie foods, you are not able to build muscles; instead you LOSE muscles,” adds Martin. “When your body doesn’t have enough lean muscles, it is not able to burn fat since your metabolic rate remains at an abnormally low level. So that is one more reason why low calorie diets don’t work!”

Most of these low calorie diets will only help people lose water and muscles. People believe they have actually lost several dozen pounds; when in fact, they have not lost the single most important thing that is keeping you from becoming slim: and that is FAT! Basically, in order to become fit, the body must lose the fat.
